Bachman Subaru Checklist for Summer Travel
No one wants to begin the vacation with a car malfunction on your way to rest and relaxation. That’s why we’ve created this checklist to help you and your family prepare for the best vacation yet!
1. Get your oil changed
Commuting and everyday travel puts a lot of stress on your Subaru, and tacking on a long trip only exacerbates the toll on your car.
Changing the oil is one of the most basic car care items. It’s recommended that you change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If you haven’t gotten your oil changed in a while or your trip covers a long distance, go ahead and bring in your Subaru so we can check it out!
If you’ve recently gotten your oil changed or it’s not quite time for a change, at least check your oil level, especially if you have an older vehicle.
Here’s how to check your oil:
- Open the hood of your car and find the dipstick.
- Pull out the dipstick and wipe the oil off the end.
- Reinsert the dipstick, making sure to push it back all the way.
- Pull it out and see where the oil is on the end of the dipstick.
- The oil should reach the indicator marks on the end of the dipstick.
2. Get your tires rotated
Road trips are long and kids are not exactly the most patient travelers, but the last thing you need is a bumpy and shaky ride.
Rotating your tires ensures that all four tires are wearing evenly. Getting your tires rotated before a trip can make for a smoother ride, while also extending the life of your tires.
It’s recommended that you get your tires rotated every six months or 6,000 miles, but if you haven’t gotten them rotated recently, it’s a good idea to have it done before your trip as you’ll be putting a lot of miles on the tires.
As an added bonus, typically when you get your tires rotated the service technician will also check tire pressure and the brakes, which can help prevent more problems on the road.
If your car drifts to one side when driving, then you might consider going a step further and getting an alignment.
3. Get your brake pads replaced
Few things in your car are more important than your brakes. Your family’s safety is always your number one priority and taking care of your brakes is the first step to ensuring safety when driving. And you can guarantee that there will be plenty of braking opportunities on your way to your vacation destination, especially with heavy summer traffic.
Noises, grinding, or pulsation when braking can all be signs that your brake pads need to be replaced. Brake pads are the frontline defense for your braking system when they wear out the rest of your brake system may not be far behind. To ensure the safety of your family, make sure you get your brake pads replaced if there is any indication that they have worn thin.
4. Clean your car
Preparing for your vacation by washing and cleaning your car might not seem like a big deal, but having a washed car can make a long trip more pleasant.
The most important aspect of having a clean car is visibility. A freshly washed car will be free of dirt and debris on the windows and windshields, giving you unobstructed views. Many car washes also offer an application of a water-repealing treatment, which is helpful when you encounter rain on road trip, especially on unfamiliar routes.
And of course, having a clean interior can help you keep your sanity during the long drive. Having your whole family in the car for hours on end is stressful enough, and chances are you’ll accumulate trash and dirt along the way. Starting your trip crum-free and rid of sticky cup holders can make for a more relaxed drive.
